Algorithmic Spiral Image
Year: 2024
Medium: Iris paper folding
Dimensions: 36" x 24"
Even before surviving a traumatic brain injury in 2013, math was always a challenge for Nicole Gauvin. This piece visually represents how math feels in her mind — equations, numbers, and sequences folding, twisting, and spinning into an indecipherable chaos. Gauvin used a spiral pattern as a guide, working from the outer edges toward the “iris” at the center. Each layer is individually cut, folded, and carefully assembled with tape, creating a multi-dimensional expression of Gauvin's experience with mathematics.

Artist: Nicole Gauvin (https://knerq.square.site)
Canadian artist and long-time Virginia resident Nicole Gauvin crafts each art piece by hand, blending creativity with resourcefulness. She taught herself the intricate technique of iris paper folding, which originated in 20th-century Holland, where artists repurposed patterned paper from the inside of envelopes to create mesmerizing designs. As an artist-in-residence at Palette 22, Nicole brings new life to upcycled materials, transforming everyday items into stunning, layered compositions. She also shares her expertise by teaching workshop classes at Made in ALX.
